Ever since Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide, one of the most commonly talked subjects is ‘Mental health’. And his is not the only suicide case which India has borne the brunt of, a spate of suicides has occurred in the past and numerous have not even been reported. Myriad solutions are being talked and written about depression and mental health fragility.

But, is the issue being studied through and through to draw any conclusions or is it just the tip of the iceberg? ‘Mental health’ the two words are self-explanatory of the vitality they project. A whole gamut of aspects contributes to the conditioning of a brain. And the health of one’s mind is sheerly multidimensional. One of its dimensions is linked to the upbringing atmosphere. Domestic violence is one massive role player in mental depletion game and especially in India it is not uncommon to see that it is comprehended as an integral attribute of almost every family.

Researches suggest that children who are exposed to domestic violence which is crammed with extreme tension, stress and trauma are likely to have or develop mental and behavioural issues i.e. temper issues, social anxiety, sleeping disorders, low level of self-confidence and self-esteem, frustration, distress, mood swings, fear bouts, lower IQ level etc. As aforementioned, domestic violence is customary in India especially in the regions which are not well developed and rural areas. A common and long-standing belief which runs throughout the nation is the child won’t remember the scene in a long run or will outgrow the damage caused due to tension he experienced, but the researchers suggest that it is not tenable to believe so and studies have starkly debunked the theory of such beliefs. Whether or not a child’s resilience is strong, the jolt the one goes through while engulfing in domestic violence does get registered in subconscious brain and later major mental issues come across as derivatives of it. Impairing a childhood is no less a crime on moral grounds.

The context goes even deeper if education, social atmosphere and nourishment are taken in account. Some of the dimensions of the upbringing process are more or less tough for parents to handle but home atmosphere for a child could certainly be made wholesome which invariably leads a child’s brain to reach its paramount strength. It is quite palpably evident that a child doesn’t do what he is told to do, instead he does what he witnesses being done. Every parent could make certain adjustments in order to nurture a child’s mental strength in best possible ways i.e. avoidance of arguments in presence of children, engulf peace and happiness in behaviour, distance stress, fury, tension, and so on and so forth from children.
