Modernization of the world has brought countless changes across the globe. And one of the most prominent changes is a digital world of social media which has been highly impactful on the lifestyles of people and has become a part and parcel of almost everyone’s life. Like every other change, social media has its own benefits and drawbacks. Some of the drawbacks are explained below.

Decreased self-worth and self-esteem, sadness and jealousy

The increment in the proximity of an individual with the rest of the world on a digital platform accentuates a very general trait of human beings and that is ‘Comparison’. Comparison of one’s life to others’ and it more often than not turns into inferiority complex, envy, sadness, melancholy, and in extreme cases ‘Depression’. And we all are well aware that what depression could lead one to.

Fake imagery

The aforementioned ‘Comparison’ occurs because one gets to see the imagery of another. The substantial point here is the imagery is adulterated at times. One always gets to see only what is being projected and not what the whole story is. Photo and video editing applications, filters, etc. also contribute to fabricating such facades.

Viciousness and cyber-bullying

Since social media has given everyone a platform to speak and share their opinion that too with a provision to keep their identity hidden. People now find it needless to think even twice before speaking or sharing their views in an abusive, offensive, harassing, or bullying manner.

Impatience

The applications like Tik Tok and Instagram enable users to create, share, and watch myriad videos which are usually not longer than a minute. This very property of these applications makes users crave for a different video every other minute and develops impatience among users. Impatience impact other life aspects of users and become a major hindrance when users are required to focus and concentrate for longer spans, for example: in studies or in professional life. Since these applications require minimal input from users to entertain them, they are quite addictive.

Social isolation

The more people become addicted to social media the more they prefer to stay isolated socially. It has become immensely easy for people to project their imagery in the way they wish to and communicate with everyone without having to meet in person that people usually neglect the significance of face to face interactions.
